Your guess is as good as mine. From another ship, maybe? They came through with the portals, I think. Or was damaged by them after, they were coated in the same goop.

[And the thing is- he knows why they were kept in the dark. The one item Gale was so interested in- the rest, he figures were a smoke screen for Grey's absence, or a helping hand without a supply drop coming- honestly, probably both.

With the gag order in place though, he can't mention it. And the order didn't come with an explanation for where the drop had actually come from, or why- so he leaves it at the speculation
] So some of them were damaged, that way. Lots of MRE's, some raw materials, a couple grenades. Medical supplies, and then a few weird things like, sugar and salt. And an empty toolbox.

[Which had come in handy later, when they'd come across the apiary so intent on stealing the item they were sent there to get]

And a compass. We got to keep what we found.

Is that possible? Has the crew ever run into another ship?

[He'd never applied much thought to it- but the CDC wasn't the only large corporation out there, even if they specialized in different things- but he'd figured once a planet had been marked for demolition and a crew had been given the task, that the space around it had become restricted- like the air space above important military locations.

He wouldn't have thought there'd been a ship close enough to mess with. But who knew what the range on those portals really were? There hadn't been any identifying source or even reason for most of the items. He'd found things as simple as playing cards, to broken bits of furniture- at least this had been actually useful.

Sturmhond will be able to practically here the shrug in his voice
]

I'm not actually sure. I haven't tried to use it yet- but it definitely doesn't look like any compass I've ever seen before.
