Honestly, I'm not sure. Some of us had found pieces of rock, across Ajna. They had a code etched into them - you may have seen Tess asking for help with translating it a few days ago.

We didn't know what the code was for, but when the statue's hands moved, it was clear that the pieces fit into the square shape, at its face. When we put them in, we had to input those codes. That's what stopped it.
I think we have no way of knowing. We were the CDC team, after all, and the statue was there before us. Perhaps we'll find out more now that we're here.
